PP 2004 crashes when opening old PP document with audio

Hello,
I'm having trouble opening PowerPoint documents created in Office X
using Office 2004. If the document contains links to audio files
PowerPoint crashes before completing the startup process. PP docs
created in Office X that do not contain audio open fine. I have:
1. Repaired permissions
2. Checked for and deleted corrupt fonts and font caches
3. Trashed PP prefs from user and main library folders
4. Checked and made sure audio files were 'read and write' enabled

BTW - These PP docs still open fine in Office X.

Hello Steve,

Which exact version of PowerPoint 2004 are you running? If you aren't
running 11.2, does it still happen if you upgrade to it? Are you hitting
this w/all presentations w/linked audio created with PowerPoint X or just
specific ones? Also, are you running PowerPoint X 10.1.6?

Can you post or email me one of the Microsoft Error Reporting crash logs
when you hit this issue? If you're hitting it with specific presentations,
can you email me one of them? If you'd like to email me, remove the online.

Thanks for your response. The files were created in Office X v 10.1.6.
None of the files with embedded audio open in 11.2. Here's the crash

Hi Steve,

You probably have some sounds from an older version of office
ClipGallery. They are known to crash PowerPoint 2004.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the info, although I think the problem might be something
different. I have never used sounds from the Office ClipGallery. All
are mp3's I made myself. Does PowerPoint re-encode the audio when you
add it to a presentation (making it similar to a ClipGallery audio
file?) Any other ideas? ;-)

Hi,

MP3 format files are handed to QuickTime. PowerPoint handles WAV file
formats itself.

Since there's another application involved, have you tried running
Apple's Disk Utility to make sure permissions are repaired and that the
disk is OK?

Another thing to try if the problem remains after making sure those two
things have been checked out is to make sure PowerPoint is not running
then trash PowerPoint's preferences, empty the trash, then start
PowerPoint up again.
