pps 97 download snag

Posted the other day. Because my last was less than cogent, I'll
try to be more precise.

Regardless of the PC that I use (tried 4 PCs), I get this error message
when
trying to download two different PSS files from the below website.

Powerpoint can't read C:\Docume~\Admin~1\Locals~1\Temp\MY FILE.pps

http://www.neiu.edu/~gspackar/courses/index.html
READ117 > DATABASE EXERCISE > pps
OR
READ 116 > DATABASE EXERCISE >#1 LINK > pps

SYMPTOMS
1. Download stalls after about 15% completion.
After a few minutes, when informed that the download is completed, I
get the above error message.
2. These files were created about two years ago; phenomenon is recent.
3. If FTPed to different server, files download problem free.
4. On PC where original files reside, I am able to open and view ppt
and pps without a problem.

Posted screen shot of error on website home page.
This has me totally flummoxed.
Is it the server?
Am I in the right place?

Thanks in advance.

I tried downloading the file and also had similar problems. I suspect that you
need to turn to your web or server administrator for help. Have you tried
deleting the file from the server and reloading it?

Thanks for checking and responding, Sonia.
Yes, I have tried deleting & reloading, I have renamed, I have changed
remote locations, etc. By the way, Word docs, for example,
download/open without a hitch.

May I assume that if you also had trouble downloading and that files
download fine from another server, then I can rule out corrupted files
or a systemic problem with my PC?

Lastly, might that error message give any clues?

Thanks again

I think the file is probably corrupt, if you can't open it. I never got a
message at all. But, you mentioned being able to load the same file to another
server and it works fine. That's what led me to believe that the problem is
with the server.

At least you know that it is not specific to your client machine. All the
message means is that whatever got downloaded and is now stored in your Temp
folder, cannot be opened by PowerPoint. It probably means that it is a
corrupted file, but there is no way to know where or when the corruption
occurred - - on the server or during transmission or during the write to your
Temp folder.

Well then, lastly, if I created a new test pps with same PP program on
same PC, same server, different remote folder entirely and same problem
occurred, isn't my problem narrowed to either the server (as you
mentioned) or with the actual program, rather than the suspected file?

And if problem does not lie with server, should I be reinstalling
Powerpoint?

Am awaiting info back from server admin.
By the way, does MS Office need to be uninstalled before reinstalling?

Thanks for everything and I like your web site!

That thought crossed my mind.
During the episodes, I checked the transfer type.
My ftp software defaults to binary.

I am writing this from my work PC. Tried to load different
file from here, thinking that my home PP software might be culpable.
Same results. A real conundrum.

Contacted my school server. It's a university so the
wheels turn more slowly.

In the event that someone comes across this discussion looking for
answers,
the mentioned file issue has, oddly, corrected itself. The problem
is/was not a corrupted file, as the files in question eventually began
to download again, after more than a week of hanging up.
Frankly, no one, including a network guy from my server had any
definitive answers. I suspect a virus in the server, if that is
possible.
