PPT 2004 extremely slow with network files

I've noticed PowerPoint 2004 is extremely slow whenever opening or
saving anything located on a network/remote volume. I have obvserved
this behavior on three separate computers.

When opening a PPT in PowerPoint 2004 from a network, PowerPoint just
sits there for a minute and then opens the file. If I double-click
several PPTs, the program sits for even longer before finally opening
a PPT.

I'm sure others have this problem. How can it be fixed?

Have you tried copying the same file to the local HDD and timing it to see how
long it takes? And then timing how long it takes to open the file from the
local HDD? And then repeating the test a time or two to account for network
server cache effects.

That would give you some idea whether it's PowerPoint, the network or PPT +
Network that's the source of the problem.
