PPT 2007 links to Excel 2007 - how to stop update links at startup?the second try

Hi,
since I am apparently unable to post in the original thread (http://
groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.powerpoint/browse_thread/

question:

Has anyone already been able to solve the problem. You have a PP-file
with linked Excel graph/tables. You open PP, it asks you about
updating yes or cancel and you choose cancel....and then Excel is
opened for every single linked object one by one. This is even true if
you open the excel file first and then the PP-file. Of course it
doesnt open the excel file anymore, but internally, I assume it checks
every single link once again, even though I said "cancel".

So I was wondering, since apparently a lot of people experienced this
"feature", if someone found a solution.
Thanks a lot in advance for any suggestions.

Oh, and as in the original post..changing "update links" from auto to
manual doesnt change anything.

You might try this hotfix.

"It takes a long time to open a document that contains many linked Microsoft
Office Excel charts" (as stated in the hotfix description) doesn't describe
the problem very well, but it's my understanding that this hotfix addresses
the issue you're posting about with links being updated.

I believe it will be rolled into Service Pack 2, which, as Steve mentioned,
should be available later this month if you want to wait until then.

Well, thanks very much so far. Will try the hotfix and then keep my
fingers crossed for the 28th and SP2.
There are soo many things wrong with Office 2007 (no proper inverted
bars anymore, this problem here etc.)...sigh


Just tried the hotfix, doesnt seem to do much with a closed Excel and
opening PP first. Still the same deadly loop of opening and closing.
When having the Excel-file open and than opening the PP-file it
"seems" to be available quicker...however (there is always a "but"
with Microsoft I suppose), closing Excel now and then trying to go
into the Options-Menu of PP opens the deadly opening and closing loop
of Excel again. VERY interesting.

Will just wait for SP2 to come and then see what they fixed and what
not and what new "features" (it's a feature NOT a bug..silly) they
built in.

Darn, I'm sorry it didn't work. Let us know if the service pack does any
better, will you, please? We see enough reports of this here that if it
doesn't, we should probably re-report the bug. Maybe send some sample
PPT+Excel docs....

Hi,
our IT still hasnt decided when to install SP2, so I cannot confirm,
that the problem has been solved, unfortunately.....
Will get back to you as soon as they move their b....and install it.

People, I have had the exact same problem. No offense to the Micosoft Office
Experts, but it seems you guys are not catching what the users are asking.
I'm unsure if it is that the users do not know how to explain themselves
properly or maybe because you guys do not understand the situation or
frustration of the users.

I know what it feels like because I have experienced it first-hand this week
(13 July 2009 to 16 July 2009).

Between myself and my collegue, we have done extensive research on this
issue and have found a workable and quite friendly solution to the problem.

The problem is this; When you have a "Display" machine like a "Kiosk" in the
staff canteen. You would like to have a PowerPoint presentation running there
24/7. The problem is to update this presentation without touching the
"Dispaly" PC. PowerPoint does not allow a smooth update to the presentation
without user intervention. The Presentation should work FOR YOU, and YOU FOR
the presentation.

Guys, if you would like to know the solution, please, e-mail me on

It involves downloading some software and installing add-in's. It's quite a
process. I haven't actually written a"procedure" as such, and also, I am
unsure if I am allowed to name the software and add-in's here.

Hi
since our IT still hasnt upgraded to SP2 (thank you guys...tsts) I
still cant say anything if the SP2 would solve the problem. However, I
would be very much interested in seeing the solution Spazzeroony
mentioned. I actually dont see a problem posting it here, as Echo
said, thats what the group is for and also naming the software
shouldnt be a problem. So just tell us, what software/addins and then
its up to each user to decide if they want to try.

OK, great, I'll do so quickly. I hope there won't be a problem.

Firstly, if it is a "kiosk" machine that will be running 24/7, what happens
if you have a power outage and the power comes on again? You have to change
the settings in the PC's BIOS to "power-on" the PC automatically when the
power is restored.

Secondly, if the PC signs on to a domain, you will have to do a registry
edit to make the PC to automatically log-on to the domain. This you will find
at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315231

Thirdly, you will need to download an add-in for power point called "Update
Links" from http://www.bettersolutions.com/powerpoint/PCA723/NI014518332.htm

Fourthly, you will need to download "Message Point", "Plan Point", and "Show
Point" from http://www.presentationpoint.com/software/free_addons/

Now, once the PC log's in automatically, you open Microsoft Power Point and
install the "Update Links" Add-In by clicking on the orb, going to PowerPoint
Options, clicking on "Add-Ins", selecting PowerPoint Add-Ins from the
"Manage" drop down, and clicking "Go". Here you guide to the "Update Links"
Add-In and install it. This creates a new tab on the ribbon called "Add-Ins"
with an "Update Links" button. There you can set-up the Add-In. This
basically automatically updates linked objects everytime the slideshow loops.

Then you install Show Point. This will update any changes to the
presentation on the very next slide when you save over the old presentation.
It has a couple of settings, but it's very straight forward.

Plan Point also installs a tab on your Power Point ribbon. this allows you
to "program" each slide individually to display or not-display at certain
times or dates. Also, very straight forward.

Show Point installs as a screen saver. This allows you to run your
presentation as if it were a screen saver. Very useful if you want to have
the same presentation running on all desktops through-out the company.

There are obviously some reading to do, but it really is not that difficult.
