PPT 2208 Mac converting to PPT 2003 XP

I'm a student with Mac loving friends who have created a presentation in ppt
2008, no matter what we have tried I still cannot open the file. It seems to
work OK with another friend who has 2007, but even when he converts the file
to 2003 it won't open on my machine. I have installed the file conversion
and viewer .exe's which have served me well for 2007 files, but its doing
nothing for 2008.

My computer has been provided by my education authority as part of a
disabilities package so I can't just upgrade to 2007 (I also can't afford to)
- can anyone help?!?!?

You shouldn't have to jump through any hoops to open the file. How are you
receiving these files? I wonder if they're becoming corrupt in your email or
something.

Can your PPT open a new, blank presentation? How about existing files -- can
it open those okay?

Yes I can open a blank presentation. I can even open the file on the uni
PC's which are 2007 but when I save it from there as a 2003 i still can't
open it. Help

I have received it in two ways - firstly by e-mail converted into a 2003
version, and secondly I opened it earlier in the week on a 2007 pc and saved
it onto a memory stick remembering to save as a 2003 file. Its totally
freaking me out - it should work but nothing seems to unless you have 2007
installed.

thanks for helping

Email is a notorious corruptor of files, so I wouldn't trust that.

If you saved the file directly to a memory stick, you're just asking for a
corrupt file. You want to save it to your harddrive, then copy it to the
memory stick. You also want to "safely remove hardware" in the Windows task
pane to stop the stick before yanking it out of the system.

Here's some information on preventing file corruption
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/HA011168771033.aspx?pid=CH010036301033

I think that the files you're trying to open are corrupt. Oh, are you
getting any kind of error messages when you try to open the file?

Here's some reading for you:

"PowerPoint can't open the type of file represented by [FILENAME]" or "No
text converter is installed for this file type"
