PPT viewer 2003 does not play avi automatically.

I have been using a pre 2003 version of the PPT viewer to play presentations
from a CD.
On upgrading to 2003 viewer, I find that avi files included on slides do not
play automatically.
They do play if clicked, and play automatically if the presentation is run
from PowerPoint
rather than the viewer. This behaviour seems the same in the 2007 viewer.
Any ideas on how to get the avi files to run automatically in the viewer
would be appreciated.
