PPT2000 - strange sound failure

hi-

PPT2000 has stopped playing sound files - I can insert sound files no
problem, but when I try to play them (in either slide view or presentation
view) nothing happens. No error messages, but no sound either. This is the
case with MP3, WMA and WAV files.
Video objects I have inserted work fine - including sound.

I have read Austin Myers' excellent troubleshooting guide, and confirmed
that my registry settings are OK. The files work fine in Windows Media
Player also.

I'm stumped - does anyone have any ideas, or experienced anything similar? I
don't think I've overlooked anything obvious - but it wouldn't be the first
time!

The key is NOT Windows Media Player, it is Media Player (this is a common
confusion with MS's choice to name these programs so much alike). Do the
sounds play on the program that PowerPoint 2000 uses?

Thanks for the reply - I did test the files using Media Player
(mplayer2.exe) I just slipped up when typing in the prog name (it's a shame
the guys at MS have such a poor imagination when it comes to naming
things! - and I have such poor attention to detail...).

The link you gave was where I found Austin Myers' PPT guide, and as far as I
can tell my system should be OK. Registry keys match (in both MCI Extensions
and MCI32 groups).

I take it that the fact the files play in MediaPlayer means that I have the
required codecs on the system?

I've tried re-installing PPT, removed quicktime and winamp, but still no
joy.

Still Stumped.

Hi Valleysboy,

Try reinstalling DirectX and WMP after you've removed QT. Won't hurt and
might help.

Thanks for this - It's taken me a while as I was working away and
downloading over a dial-up connection was taking forever. Back on ADSL now
so I've re-installed as suggested and I now seem to have some limited
functionality back - but there are some strange things happening...

Some files will play, others won't. All files play OK in media player
(mplayer2.exe), they are all mp3 files, recorded at the same bit rate by the
same programme (Musicmatch).

I moved all files into the same directory as the PPT show, and they all
worked.

I then copied them into a sub-directory of the PPT show directory - most
work, some won't.

It all seems a bit bizarre....

I have also noticed, that when I play a sound file a thin black line about 2
pixels deep appears in the top left hand corner of the screen, stretching
about a third of the way across the screen. This appears whether the sound
file plays or not. Further inspection shows this happens when in slide view
as well as when in presentation view.

I'm not at all sure whats going on - any ideas gratefully accepted. If I
ever get this properly sorted I'll post an explanation back here....
