ppview32.exe will not start from CD

I want to distribute a cd that will play a ppt presentation on WIN 98 first
edition. When I decompress/unpack my presentation to a hard drive-it
(pptview32.exe) starts fine, allowing a choice of which presentation to run,
when I decompress/unpack to a CD, pptview32.exe will not start on a system
running WIN 98 first edition. It will start from CD under WIN 98 SE and
above. How do I get pptview32.exe to open from CD under WIN 98 first edition?

Is it just that the CD won't autorun on the Win 98 system? Have you actually
tried running pptview32.exe (the PowerPoint 97 Viewer) on the Win 98 system? I
ask because the PowerPoint 97 Viewer runs just fine on Win 98. However, if the
system is set to not recognize the autorun function on the CD drive, the CD
won't start. Try going to My Computer, locate the pptview32.exe file on the CD
drive and double click it. Does the Viewer open?

If I am running 98 first edition, the viewer will not open on CD. I click
it-no reaction. It will open on the hard drive. If I try the same CD under
98SE it opens on CD. Under either system, if I copy the viewer and its
support files to the hard drive-the viewer opens fine when I click it.
Problem of opening when I click on it is only on CD under 98 first edition.

Strange. I've never heard that before. See the system requirements at
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Ppview97.aspx
and you'll see that it *should* be fine on Win 98. It may have something to do
with your CD or your CD drive. It would require testing on multiple Win 98
systems to actually pin it down. I have no solution since I don't know where
the problem is and I don't have access to a Win 98 system.

I have tried several systems-ppview32.exe does NOT start from CD running
WIN98 first edition. The issue is soly the CD aspect, it works fine when
started from the hard drives on all computers I tried.

Just as a follow-up, Nate posted the following in another thread:

"I solved it late last night!! It's all about how the CD is created. Using
CDFS or ISO enabled on Roxio makes all the difference. PPT97 opens fine from
the CD under 98. When they are not the choices (CDFS, ISO) , everything looks
fine, and works fine-except PPT97 viewer trying to open under 98 first
edition from the CD drive!! It seems to be the only *.exe program that needs
the extra cross platform compatability to function properly. Viewing the CD
under properties you CANNOT see any difference-"UDFRDR" with or without ISO
looks the same, except to PPT97. Isn't that just how life always works-were
challanged, thanks for the help."

We always love to hear back when someone solves their own problem because it
will surely help others now or in the future.
