Pre-2007 Customizations

I apologize in advance for questions that must have been asked before,
but there 's so much buzz around the ribbon that it makes searching
difficult.

I am running the Office 2007 Trial.

I have been running MS Office since 1995 when I was dragged kicking
and screaming away from DOS. In those 7 years, I have continually
customized the programs, especially Word and Excel so they work the
way I want them to. That includes primarily custom functions and
custom menus.

As to custom functions, the code seems to work so far. But my problem
is customized menus. My menu customizations fall into two categories -
(1) adding program functions I use a lot to menus and toolbars, and
(2) adding my macros to menus and toolbars.

Up through Office 2003, it was a snap. Go into customization and drag
the function or macro to the menu or toolbar you want.

In 2007, the ability seems to be gone ("you vill use our program =our=
way!!") And so far, the "best" answer I could find has been that, in
order to port my customizations from 2003 to 2007, I will need to take
the free time I don't have and learn XML just so I can do my regular
work the way I want.

Is that about it? And, if so, are there any good tutorials out there?

Hi Mark,

Yep, that's about it. You can use my RibbonCustomizer add-in linked
below for (1), but I don't support (2) yet.

Great. I'm thrilled that Microsoft decided that it was necessary to
support programmers instead of long-time users. Yours is the second
product I've come across that is Office 2007-specific. The other is
Classic Menu - very cool for those who want to be able to actually
find the functions they use.

Thanks for the link to your customizer. I have a funny feeling that
Office 2007 just isn't in my future.

....

There's another approach you could take which involves adding a menu
to the QAT.

This is something MSFT should have thought of for the transition, but
that assumes they care about their users.

That looks like an excellent approach. For <2003, I already have my
code in a file that loads as an add-in...

Thanks for the link.
