pre-release evaluation file issues

Jeb

I am trying to open an mpp file and I get an error message
that says

"File format not supported. this file was created in a
pre-release version of Project and cannot be opened."

Has anyone out there encounted this error? And if so do
you have any suggestions about how I could open the file?
Thanks.

The only solution is to get ahold of the beta version that this file was
created with.
This is a difficult task as:

1) There are typically a few different beta releases for each product.
2) No one involved in the beta has that stuff installed on their computer
anymore
3) No one knows which version your file was created in.

So, if you created the file, then look in the bottom of your bottom desk
drawer for the Beta CD, uninstall project, install the beta, open the file,
if it is not the right version, uninstall the beta, find the other disk,
install the other version, open the file, save in a previous version,
uninstall the beta, install project, open the file.

If you got it from someone else, ask them to do that for you. If it was
really important then it wouldn't be in the beta format anyway. Personally
I'd just hit the delete key.

You didn't happen to get this file from a CD that accompanied a book on
Microsoft Project, did you? I ran into this error when I created sample
files while writing a couple of chapters in the "Special Edition: Using
Microsoft Project 2002" book from Que. The error indicates that the file
was created using an early beta version of Microsoft Project. If you got
the file from a book, you may want to contact either the publisher or the
author of the book for an updated file. Otherwise, if this is not the
reason for the error, please let us know.
