Preferences not being saved (Word X)

I'm working with a group of people and we find ourselves setting (and
resetting) options for AutoFormat as you type and various Preferences
(like Edit-Enable click & type).

The settings are saved for a day or two, then revert back to defaults,
seemingly by themselves.

Any thoughts as to what my be happening here?

We are using Word v.X, Mac OS 10.3.4, and a variety of machines
(PowerMacs, eMacs, iMacs, various 'Books). This problem has been
occurring since since we installed Office X last December (under 10.3.0
and 10.3.1).

I've trashed the prefs numerous times, but that doesn't seem to help.
