Prefix .xls] after renaming a sheet?

I have copied a sheet and after I have renamed that sheet I end up with the
prefix .xls] in front of the new name. I have been working with Excel on and
off for a couple of years now but I have never encountered this problem.

The excel spreadsheet that this is happening to is located on another
computer than I originally used to create the sheet. It is also a secured
sheet.

What can I do to remedy this problem?

Renaming the file does not work.
Do you mean renaming the file or the sheet?
Like i said, renaming the sheet is the problem and renaming the file is not
working either?

Close excel.
Open windows explorer
Find that file
Rename it.

Remove and [ or ] that you have in the name.

Those []'s cause nothing but trouble in excel.

The cause is those []'s in the file name.

Those brackets mean something special to excel. Create two workbooks and put a
formula refering to the first workbook into the second workbook.

Close and save that first workbook and you'll see how that formula changes to
include the drive and path and how those []'s are used.

Why excel can't do a better job--I don't know.

I got the same problem of prefix ".xls]" after renaming the worksheet. I
read your reply here and tried your method by renaming the workbook first.
The problem is solved. There is no more prefix".xls]". Thanks a lot.

I would also like to know what causes this problem.

try to solve it, but in vain. You have helped me. I appreciate much for your
