"Preparing to install"

Jeff

I get this message in a box when word loads. I
investigated with the MS website and they said it is by
design when two versions of word exist. I only have word
2002 now but have others on this computer in the past. I
suspect that there are remnants of the old word programs
in the registry but am illiterate in registry editing to
remove them. I've also heard that uninstalling and
reinstalling doesn't work. By the way, when I open the
Remove Program applet, there is no separate listing for
Word, only one for Office.
Hope someone can help.

Hi Jeff,

It could be that you are using a limited user account and you are
unable to update various entries in the Registry. So each time you
start Word it looks for the needed registry entries and they aren't
found.

Try logging on as the Administrator and allow the Windows Installer to
complete.

Hi Jeff,

What operating system do you have? For example in Windows XP there is
an Administrator account even for stand-alone home computers.

I checked and I am the adminstrator account so everything
should be installed completely as far as I know.

Hi Jeff,

What patches do you have installed for Office/Word? I seem to recall
installing the SP1 patch resolved a similar problem.

If you go to Help/About Microsoft Word and it does not reflect SP2
then You can use the Office Product Updates site and use the Scan
utility to find any needed updates:

For anyone reading this thread--I tried this, and SP3 (which
supercedes/includes SP2?) did resolve the problem. None of the other
things mentioned in other threads about this problem (logging in as
administrator) had fixed it.

Your milage may vary...
