presentation broadcast problem PP2003

I'm having trouble with getting this to work.

I frequently get the message 'PowerPoint could not
connect to the Windows Media Encoder. Press Retry and
try again.' Pressing Retry never works.

Also, when I send invitations to join the broadcast using
Outlook, when the invitees click on Accept, the
invitation message itself is promptly deleted! They need
this message to click on the link to view the broadcast.

Aden,

I haven't used this for a while so I hope I can help.

What version of PowerPoint? From what I remember, there are two ways to set
up your show. One that is rather local, and one that needs an encoder. So
how big is your audience? If it is small, you might be able to get around
this.

With the Outlook issue, it should, when people accept the invitation, drop
the message into their calendar. Then, as the show gets close to start time,
a message pops up to say, do you want to connect. Again, its been a while.
Could you get someone to search their calendar to see if it is there? <Ah,
rain on the roof>! Even if you close the invitation without making a choice,
it should still be there. It will only go away if they decline.

Duh... What version??? Sorry. The right part of my brain was thinking about
the rain we are having, and the other half was thinking about getting up
early tomorrow. I was already planning the coffee and toast! Or my stomach
was <g>.

I found this which may help:

Thanks for that. I'm using PP2003 and broadcasting to a
small audience.

With Outlook, we realised that it dumped the message in
the calendar but have only now found out how to link to
the broadcast from there - right-click on the scheduled
item and select View Windows Media. We also found a
similar option in the reminders that pop up but it wasn't
very obvious - click on Meeting Services and select View
Windows Media.

Perseverance is the key! Still think it's a little odd
that the message is deleted when it is accepted though.

Thanks

Aden

Aden,

if you are broadcasting to a small audience, is there still the option to go
without an encoder for under 15 people?

Cheers Glen!

I'd thought that I had been changing the audio/video
setting to none, but I guess I must have forgotten that
step all the times that it didn't work! Haven't had time
to try it again but it sounds like that was my problem.

Thanks for your help.

There is an option for 'Do not use Windows Media Server
(limit of 10 people)' if that's what you mean, it's the
only mention of an audience size limit. There is also a
box to specify a remote encoding machine but there is no
problem with leaving it blank.

Cheers

Aden,

Yes, that's the option! As far as I remember, it installs files on a shared
directory and runs without the WM server, or gets around it somehow.

A good test would be to run a show just between two computers under that
scenario of not using the WM Server. That will then tell you if it is
running alright without the server thingo. Then, if it works, go for the
bigger audience options *with* the WM Server. And if that fails, you know it
was running before and it will help with trouble shooting of the WM server.

And lightning has just struck my brain about how I can test the new 2003 of
broadcasting features right here without a network!
