Preserve Column Widths in Table when Reordering Columns

I have a garden-variety table, explicitly defined as an Excel table,
consisting of many columns of data with varied widths. I want to reorder the
columns, e.g. move the "country" column so that it's the 10th column in the
table instead of the 3rd column, but I cant' figure out an easy way to do so
that will preserve the widths of the other columns. Has anyone discovered a
way to do this while retaining the table definition? One workaround I have
discovered is to convert the table to a normal range, select the sheet's
column containing the column of data that I want to relocate, use "Cut",
select the sheet's column where I want to move the data to, use "Insert Cut
Cells", then convert my data set back into a table. However if the defined
table is dynamically linked to an external data source, then the workaround
isn't feasible because converting the table to a normal range erases the data
connection to the external source.
