Preserve formatting when changing source of PPT links in Word

I am using Word 2003 and am linking PPT slides into the Word file. If I
rename the PPT file for version control, the Word file often loses the link.
I want to be able to use the 'change source' function in word WITHOUT
CHANGING THE FORMAT OF THE PPT SLIDE IN WORD. (Everytime I update the source,
all formatting is lost and I have to redo it all).

Help appreciated.

That's odd. What happens to the formatting?
