Pressed wrong key and can't get rid of [don't know name!]

[Word 2002]

If I knew what it was called, it's probably in the help index. I was
typing, deleting, etc., then after I pressed some combination, strange
symbols appeared all over my text.

When I try to paste it here, it pastes the text but not the symbols.

There are symbols which I think are paragarph markers, as they appear
after hard return. There are dots for every space, but the dots are
vertically centered, not on the bottom like a period.

I'm sure almost everyone except me knows what these are called. As to
how to turn them off (nothing under view did it), hopefully when I
know what to look under, Word Help will say.

You have switched on the "show hidden formatting symbols mode". Click on
the button on the toolbar at the top which appears like a flipped "P"
and you can toggle the appearance of symbols on or off.

Go to Tools->Options, select the View tab, and uncheck everything in
the "non-printing characters" section.

There have been several replies to similar questions recently. Basically,
you've clicked the 'show format' button, which looks like a very bold P. Hit
it again.
