prevent spacebar changing the default font in word 2003

I changed the default font of Word 2003 to another font, but each time the
space bar is used, the font is automatically changed back to Times Roman.
How can I prevent this?

Ctrl+Spacebar removes all direct font formatting and restores the Default
Paragraph Font, that is, the font defined by the style. If you desire a
permanent change, you need to modify the underlying style to change its
font.

To change the default font for Word 2003, you must change the font in the
Font dialog, click Default..., and answer yes--and then ensure that changes
to Normal.dot are saved. Note that this will affect only new documents
subsequently created; it has no effect on existing documents.
