Preventing office from reading documents on a single click

Hi Folks.

Is there a way to prevent explorer from opening the file in read mode
whenever the user single clicks (note : not a double click) on a file. It
almost seems like explorer reads the entire file even on a single click
(observed this through filespy.exe) on behalf of MS office. I noticed that
explorer.exe does not do this on webdav folders. Any idea what's going on and
how I can also prevent explorer\office from reading files on a single click ?
if so any keywords for me ?

Not sure if this is what you are experiencing but in WinXp with
Explorer open under
Tools
Folder Options...
General tab
click items as follows

there two choices
1) Single click to open
2) Double click to open
