Preview is showing something different than the actual document

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I have 2 separate documents in Word. One has a background "From Corner" with red coming from the top right corner and white for the rest of the page. It looks fine in the document, but when I go to print it, the preview shows a completely white page with just a tiny tint of light red in the corner, nowhere near as dark as it shows in the document. The other document has the same background but coming from the top left corner. This preview shows the background as extremely dark red all over the page. Please help.
