Preview Pane

August 2003 Consummer Reports states:
"If your email program has preview pane, disable it to
prevent the spam from reporting to its sender that you've
received it"

If you have all the patches installed, up to but not
including Office 2000 SP3. Will preview pane still send a
acknowledgement back to the spammer?

Possibly if the spammer is using web beacons/bugs (small 1x1 pixel images).
When the preview pane downloads (or attempts to download) the image the
spammer is getting a log of that download which essentially says "message
received".
