Preview view problem redux

I described my problem in a recent post on this forum, but I probably did not
state it clearly enough. Both Steve Easton and Andrew Murray tried to help me
solve the problem. The solution, though, was not adequate. Maybe there is no
solution.

Up untill a few weeks ago my website was healthy. I decided to clean up some
file names though. These file names had the %20 between words in the name
because there were spaces. I removed the spaces and the multiple %20s
disappeared. I made these changes following the guidelines in Jim Buyens
FrontPage 2003, Inside Out (an excellent book).

Since this minor change in my website, over half the pages in my site cannot
now be displayed in the Preview view when I'm offline. When I'm online the
Preview view shows all pages correctly.

When I preview the pages online and pass the mouse pointer over the
navigation hyperlinks, I get strange file names. For example, on my Biology
of Baldness page the path looks like this:
file://C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Owner/My%20Documents/My%20Webs/HR1/biology_of_baldness.htm.
The file name for this page when not on Preview is - biology_of_baldness.htm.
Does this elaborate path in the Preview mode have any significance?

After making the minor adjustments to my file names previously, I
recalclulated the hyperlinks. This did not solve the problem of the erratic
Preview mode either.

My website looks healthy both in my local copy and on the Internet -
http://www.hairloss-reversible.com. What is the significance of the
malfunctioning Preview view? Is it possible to restore it to 100% functional
status again?

I built my website with FrontPage 2000 but upgraded it using the 2003
version.

Open your online site in FP
(File Open Site and enter http://www.hairloss-reversible.com/)
Then in Remote Web Site View (Remote Web Site Properties) select File System web and browse to your pc site location, and Publish
All (Remote Web Site Properties - Publishing tab)
- select replace navigation if asked

I took care of the problem of the page with a space in the file name. This
was easy. But your suggestions for my major problem raise some questions. I
need a little clarification before I implement them. Here is your suggestion
for fixing my faulty Preview view problem:

The reason I'm worried about doing this is something that Jim Buyens wrote
in that monster FrontPage 2003 book of his:

File System - Choose this option if you access the remote Web server by means of a drive and path on your computer, or by means of Windows file sharing. This is also the correct option if you're preparing to transport a Web site by means of removable media.

You should avoid this option if the remote Web site is running the FrontPage Server Extensions or Windows SharePoint Services, even if you can access the server's file space directly. This is because a server-based Web (which you access by means of an HTTP URL) has more features than a disk-based Web (which you access through the Windows file system).

My hosting service, Lexiconn, has the 2002 FrontPage Server Extensions. Do
you still feel I could solve my problem by doing what you suggested? I don't
want to mess up because I have limited technical skills.

In FrontPage 2003, the Local site is the one you have open, the Remote
site is the one you are publishing to.
From Stefan's advice, you are publishing from your online site on
http://www.hairloss-reversible.com (the Local site since it is open)
to your hard disc (remote site - you are publishing to it). Jim
Buyen's advice is accurate, but you must understand the definitions
and locations which can be confusing (in my case, the Local site is
about 8000 miles away, and the Remote site is next to my left foot )
Stefan's advice is good.

I'm going to do as you suggested to see if it takes care of the Preview view
malfunction. I have a few questions before I start though:

1. After I select the botton for File System in the Remote Web Site
Properties box, what do I enter in the Remote Web site Location field? Do I
enter my root web site, which is C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My
Documents\My Webs\HRI? Or do I enter my Internet domain name -
http://www.hairloss-reversible.com?

2. Do I then have to go to the Publishing tab and under Publish select the
button for: All pages, overwriting pages already on destination?

3. Is this process something like reverse publishing, or is what's happening
an internal shuffling of files? I don't understand how all this will solve my
very minor problem but I'm going to give it a try - and wait for the
explosion.

You enter the location you are publishing to -
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Webs\HRI
though it will be easier to browse to the location and let FP type it
in.

2. Do I then have to go to the Publishing tab and under Publish

Yes - that would also synchronise the two webs' meta data, and ensure
that all pages are the same.
Also, before publishing, download FPcleaner from
www.95isalive.com/fixes and run the routines for removing temporary
files and Web Cache files. Removing these does no harm, and may be a
factor in your problem.

3. Is this process something like reverse publishing, or is what's
happening
an internal shuffling of files? I don't understand how all this will
solve my
very minor problem but I'm going to give it a try - and wait for the
explosion.

This is "reverse publishing".
If the online web is OK, publishing it to your hard disc will restore
the hard disc version to its correct functionality.
Don't forget to Replace navigation if asked, do not choose the Merge
option.
