Previous Files no longer viewable

I copied some previous files (Office, Adobe, etc.) and I have also recently saved newer files on my computer. However, after performing critical updates, I am no longer able to view those files. I am able to view some of the newer saved files that I created prior to the updates

No viruses detected. I keep getting "text encoding" messages when I try to open the files. I wasn't getting that message prior to my most recent updates. "System Restore" did not fix the problem

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I forgot to add that I have Windows XP Professional (upgraded from Windows XP Home Edition). I have Office 2003 installed.
