Primer on photos and graphics in Word?

Can anyone point me to a web page or other resource with a basic primer on
using photos and graphics in Word? I'm looking for answers to things like:
what's the difference between formats? what are the different ways to put a
photo or graphic in your document, and what happens to your document when
you do? what happens to the rest of your photo when you crop it, and does
it affect anything else?

Any information at all is greatly appreciated.
