Print a Page Range broken?

R

Roger Morris

With Word X (in Office X) updated to 10.1.5
Mac OS 10.3.1

Consider a multipage Word document
File > Print
Enter a Page range (eg) 2,4 (or any other valid range)
or Enter numbers in the From-To boxes
press Print (or Preview)
Prints (or Previews) selected range OK - just as expected

Now repeat:
File > Print
TRY to Enter Page range (eg) 2,4 (or any other valid range)

BUT this time the Page Range dialog will not accept any typing.
The From/To dialog is similarly 'dead' and cannot be changed.

The cursor does appear in the dialog when appropriate box is clicked but
there is then no response to a number key being pressed.

Closing/reopening the document does not help

Quitting Word then restarting does restore dialog to expected condition
but only for ONE usage. ie again no repeat use is possible.

I have tried trashing Normal and Settings - neither helps

I don't know how long this problem has existed because I can't remember
when I last tried to print a range of pages of a doc.

Only noticed in Word. Excel seems to be OK as do other apps.

Please can anyone tell me what is broken?

Brainstorming...

If you have any add-ins in the Word Startup Folder, they may be causing
conflicts--remove them all and replace one by one.

In addition to Normal and the Prefs file (which I assume is what you mean by
Settings, I think it may be called that), you can also try deleting:
The Word Font cache
The Carbon Registration Database
Both will be automatically recreated on re-launching Word.

You could also make sure there isn't an updated printer driver, see if
changing printer drivers helps, or reinstall your printer driver.

Here's a general troubleshooting link:

(but you can't view it in Safari, sorry)

Hi Dayo,

Thanks for these tips.

Yesterday, after my first post, I found the problem seemed to be
intermittent (meaning I couldn't reliably reproduce it). At one time it
seemed to be connected with use of Preview, but not consistently.

Today I have deleted all that you suggested and then restarted both
machine and Word. (but didn't reinstall printer driver)

So far the problem has not recurred - Success - Thank you for your help.

Roger
