print command will only print single columns

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

I have a multi-sheet workbook.
Attempting to print one sheet from that workbook. Defined print area; tried to define portrait mode and 100% -- excel forces everything into single columns (and therefore multiple pages) to print.

Unable to adjust (move) column print width, complains that it would make the area less than 10%.
