Print Layout View - 7 year old PROBLEM HEEEELLLP!!!

For years I have been trying to change the background texture / color of the
Print Layout view under the View tab in Word 2000. I can view color or
texture in any view except Print Layout. It reverts back to white background
as soon as I select Print Layout. I have tried every possible option to
correct this. I would be extremely grateful if someone could solve a 7 year
mystery for me. I have visited forums etc with no success. Thanks in advance.

Print layout should show your background but Normal view won't. At least
that's my recollection from Word 2000. Does your color show up when
published? Can you elaborate on why this is important? Not that I want to
pry, but sometimes when we know the whys, its easier to be creative on the
hows.

Thanks for the quick reply. This is only an issue because the white
background makes my eyes tired when I type. When I add a brown textured
background it is much easier on the eyes. I do not print this out- just for
day to day typing. I like being able to see the entire page when I type and
not have a full view which takes up the entire screen. I cannot get a colored
or textured view in print layout, in normal view I can.

As an alternative, have you tried the "Blue background, white text"
option (Tools | Options, General tab)?

Unfortunately, I do not have access to older versions of Word so I am kind of
at a loss to help you as much as I would like to. I run Word 2003 and here's
what I do:

View>Print Layout

Then:

Format>Backgound (and then choose color)

That works for me.

The only other thing I can suggest is Suzanne Barnhill's website and/or
those of other MVPs in the group. Their knowledge has helped me more than I
could ever thank them for and Suzanne is one of the best. Perhaps you will
find a topic on her website which will enlighten you to a solution. I hope
so. Otherwise, wait a day or so, and I'm sure somebody much smarter than me
will offer you a solution. This is the best place for answers on Office
products. The people here (excluding myself) are the best of the best. I
try to answer a question here and there when I can, but must admit that I
take away much more than my abilities allow me to give in return:

Yes I have. It reminds me of the blue screen of death from windows '98 and I
have a siezure when I see it. I guess no textured background for eva then?

Hi Eva,

If you don't like the white text on blue background, you have three choices:
.. adjust your monitor;
.. put up with it; or
.. insert a coloured full-page autoshape into the header or footer (so that it gets replicated on all pages). Depending on the shade,
this may also affect the printed output, so you might want to delete it at print time (you could use a macro to delete and restore
it as part of the print process).

Like you, I find the white background too bright for everyday use (I do
switch to the standard window color when taking screen shots for my Web
articles), so I have changed the window color to a soft ivory. To do this,
go to the Windows desktop, right-click and choose Properties to open the
Display Properties dialog, and choose the Appearance tab. Select Window and
customize the color to suit you. If you want to try the color I use (which
is the same as the color used for ScreenTips, often described as "yellow"),
try RGB 255, 255, 225.

Changing the Window color will change the "paper" color in Word and the
default background window and dialog color in all applications (including
Web pages that don't have a specified background color). You'll probably
want to save this color scheme under a new name so that you can revert to
the Standard or Classic (or some other) color scheme when needed.
