Print Preview

I can't seem to find the Print Preview function on Word or Excel 2008. Did it disappear? I'd rather not have to use the preview from the Print window, since I've found it really slow and not as accurate...

Though its icon is no longer part of the default toolbar, the print preview
is still present in Office 2008. To access it, click on File>Print Preview.
If you want it to your Standard toolbar, do the following: ctrl-/right-click
the Standard toolbar and choose Customize Toolbars and Menus. Click on
Commands, select File in the Categories section and scroll down to Print
Preview in the Commands section. You can then drag that Print Preview icon
back into the toolbar.

Hi Carol -

Word 2008 supports its own Print Preview, but Excel & PPt do not. In Word,
access it from the File menu or key Command+F2 to toggle back & forth
between Print Preview & your current view. Also, the Print Preview icon can
be added to any of Word's toolbars if you wish.

I'm curious about the reference to accuracy, though. Are you referring to
the Quick Preview displayed in the Print dialog? If so I can understand
what you mean - that isn't really intended to be "accurate". It's just an
indicator. If you click the Preview button at the bottom of that dialog the
document will be presented in Apple's Preview application - that should be
an even more accurate representation of what the printed file will look
like* - especially compared to what Print Preview actually provided in
earlier versions. If that's not the case for you, make sure you don't have
different printers selected in the main application as opposed to Preview.

If the selected printer is the same you might do well to check for an
updated printer driver & repair disk permissions.

If these suggestions don't improve things please provide more specific
details on OS & Office version and exactly what you mean by "not as
accurate" - perhaps someone will be able to offer other suggestions.

*This method is in compliance with Apple's OS X guidelines, so I wouldn't
expect to see Print Preview returned to any programs once it goes away.

Hi, Michel and Bob,

I believe you are right, the accuracy of Preview's preview (accessed through the "Print" function) is determined by the printer I've been selecting. The process is way too cumbersome for me to use the way I use the "Print Preview" icon within Excel, though.

I'm not sure why I couldn't find the "File>Print Preview" in Word (mea culpa!), and thank you for telling me how to customize it.

I just managed to procrastinate on everything else I have to do today by reading mactopia's Excel forum on this topic, and have pretty much decided to go back to using Excel 2004. I may do it for Word, too--I can't quite figure out if there are any improvements in 2008 over 2004.

I'd assumed, silly me, that Office 2008 would have eliminated some of the annoyances of Office 2004. It looks like the perfect storm of Microsoft's more limited resources allocated to Mac users combining with Apple's rapid introduction of the Intel chip. Speaking of storms, I'm beginning to look forward to the realization of cloud computing....

Have a great holiday weekend,
Carol
