Print ranges

Rouke

Hi,

In a master document with 15 subdocuments, (chapters and appendices) the
first three pages are unnumbered, 4-11 are numbered i-viii and the rest
are numbered 1, 2, 3, ... etc. I want to print only the unnumbered pages
plus those numbered i-viii, 2 pages per sheet.

When I select print range 1-11, Word prints 22 pages; the three
unnumbered pages, pages i-viii plus pages 1-11.

When I select print range 1-8, Word prints 19 pages; the three
unnumbered pages, pages i-viii plus pages 1-8.

When I select print range 1-3, Word prints 6 pages; the three unnumbered
pages plus pages i-iii.

When I select print range 1-1, only the first unnumbered page gets printed.

When I select print range i-viii, the office assistant tells me that
that is an invalid print range.

How do I correctly select the pages that I want printed?

Regards,

Hi Rouke,

I imagine that you have Sections that are controlling where the numbers
appear and the format in which they appear.

As a result, to get the correct pages to print you need to specify the
section number as well as (or instead of) the page number

s1 will cause Section 1 to be printed

p1s1 - p3s1 will cause the first three pages of Section 1 to be printed,
etc.

As a separate issue, I would suggest that you see the article "Why Master
Documents corrupt" at:

http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm

and "How to recover a Master Document" at:

before it is too late.

Please post any further questions or followup to the newsgroups for the
benefit of others who may be interested. Unsolicited questions forwarded
directly to me will only be answered on a paid consulting basis.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your warning Doug,

I've read it with interest. I don't think my master document is corrupt
yet, so it must be nearly corrupt. However, when a master document is
corrupt, will the subdocument also go corrupt? Anyway, I'll keep your
advice on how to recover corrupt master documents at hand, I've nearly
finished and have plenty of backups (not overwritten!)

Not using master document at all seems a bit odd, will you tell me next
time not to use Word at all?

Regards,

Hi Rouke,

No, I won't tell you not to use Word. I have been using it for 20 years
without ever creating a master document, so there are plenty of other things
that you can do with it.
