Printer asks to check cartridge but then what?

My HP printer stopped in the middle of a printing operation and said, "Remove
and check right cartridge." I did this, but nothing happened. Pushing "ok"
did nothing. Pushing "cancel" did nothing. Closing down and starting up did
nothing. Unplugging and replugging did nothing.

Once I replaced a cartridge and it resumed printing exactly where it
had left off -- didn't try to print a test page or anything. (When the
job was finished, _then_ it wanted to print the test page.)
