Printing a Book

How do I format a new document to print out in book form? I would like to
use A4 paper with two columns in landscape printed on both sides, with page
numbering. The "book" would be about 150 pages in total.
I really don't want a discussion of the "merits" or otherwise of Publisher -
just advice on how to do the above please.

Are *you* printing it or are you sending the file out to a printer?

Setup your printer for A4 paper, landscape. In page setup, booklet.
If you have Word, do the text in Word.
Back to Publisher, create a text box on (I am assuming you want a cover) pages two
and three with two columns, link the boxes. Copy and paste the text from Word (you
may want to "paste special", there are choices). Publisher will automatically create
pages and text boxes.
If you type the text within Publisher you will have to manually create text boxes and
links, with 150 pages it can become a burden. Publisher will place a text box on each
page (insert, pages) or copy the contents from previous pages but will not link the
boxes automatically.

The description given will build a booklet.

It will put the first and last pages of the document onto one sheet (1st
on the left, last on the right). The intnetion then is that the sheets
will be folded and stapled (saddle stitched).

All fine and good.

But I think you will find that for 150 pages this is not going to work
very well. Since the stack of paper will run to about 38 sheets and you
may find (a) it's tough to get a std stapler to go thru this many sheets
and (b) even with a heavy duty stapler that can go thu the sheets,
you'll find that the inner pages will stick out considerably--meaning
the outer edge will not be "flat" like you mighrt be expecting. And if
you can trim it you will find the outer margin on the inside pages will
be much smaller than that of the outer leaves.

The solution is to handle it as multiple smaller booklets of, perhaps,
16-20 pages. Which means they will then have to be bound using some
other method...perhaps plastic comb binding...because then you won't be
able to assemble them using a saddle stitch method.

Mary,
Tried what you advised, all went okay until I tried to link the text boxes.
i"ve tried to follow the help menu, but have run into trouble. Could you
advise how to link the text boxes please?

Hi Mac
I am layouting a book that will be printet by a commercial digital printing
office. Can you give me an idea of how to layout for example can I layout it
as a booklet from page one to 144 and then the printing office will assemble
the pages in the right order? Do I need to decide how many pages my
imposition will have etc.
Thanks
Stella
