Printing a poster presentation

I need to print out an 8x4 foot poster. I have two quick questions:

1. In PowerPoint, I created a slide that was half those measurements. From
your experience, would blowing it up 200% cause any distortion, such as
poorer image quality?

2. I need to print out a version of the presentation on paper. I tried
scaling it to an 8x11 inch paper, but the font was too small to read. (The
poster is twice as long as it is high, so it was very tiny on a regular piece
of paper.) I also tried changing the slide size to 8x11 inches, but that made
the font even smaller. How can I print out my presentation on a piece of
paper and have it be readable?

1) PowerPoint prints the images according to the available resolution and
the printer rsolution. In most cases, the images will be printed in at
least the resolution they were taken.

2) To print a "handout version of an 8 foot wide poster, you will need to
down-scale it more than 1:8. So anything that is 24 point font (smallish,
but readable) will become 3 point font on the hand out (mostly unreadable).
Consider changing to a larger paper (14x8.5), or using 2 pages (maybe front
& back), or redesigning the poster to fit the handout.
