Printing Barcodes in Word 2003

Hello
While the compay I work for was still using NT4 and Word 97 I developed
an application in VB6 that collated data and wrote it to a Word
Template. The Word Document created displays each piece of data as both
readable text and a Code 39 barcode. The Word document prints off
automatically and the data scanned into a LIMS system at a different
location.
The company has recently moved to XP and Word 2003 where my troubles
started !!
The barcodes created, now, will not scan because the Paragraph End
character is being included at the end of the barcode. I have tried
various barcode fonts in place of the original one but the result is
the same. The paragraph character is included whether the characters
are on-screen or switched off.

John: This might be a dumb question, but did you use an asterisk at the
beginning and end of your numbers? I know this was required for a job I did,
but I'm not sure why or if it had to do with Word 2003 or what.
Just taking a shot in the dark here!! :)

Hope it helps!

On the "*" point, in Word if you preceed with a * and end with a * the
text/barcode simply defaults to BOLD. Hence the barcode prints wrong. Turn
the auto bold feature off.

John,

Just to add to Anne's and Peter's comments...
Many Code 39 barcode fonts will let you use a different character
instead of the asterisks because of the auto bold "feature" in Word.
For example, in our fonts you can simply type
(1234)
instead of:
*1234*
