Printing, Headers, and more -- oh, my!

T

Todd

Several issues.
Office 2003, SP2, Windows XP Updated, New HP Computer AMD3500+, 1GB RAM

Printing
I can be in a word doc and hit print, it will not print till all word docs
are closed. No error messages appear. Then once they all close, it says
"there is a document that is queued to print" with options to print. Then it
prints fine. This does not happen consistently, but happens often.

Opening Document
Often a document will not open even when it is double clicked to open. If I
restart the computer, it works fine. This often happens when another word
document is already open.

Headers/Footers
All of a sudden, when opening a new blank or template (letterhead) document
the headers and footers do not show up. Nothing was changed and the "layout"
option does not rectify. If I say "show headers / footers" then it will come
back, but next time I start a new document, the old view is there.

Please advise. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall the software? Or is
there something else?

You would be more likely to get answers if you limited yourself to one
question per post, with the subject in the subject line and an explanation.

Addressing only your headers/footers question:

Tools> Options > View (tab)

Check "White space between pages" in the Print and Web Layout Options
section.

You can turn this off (or on) with an errant mouse click on your screen but
it is easier to turn off that way than it is to turn it back on. If you go
to the gray area between pages with your pointer, it will turn into a couple
of white blocks, one over the other. The tool tip is "Hide white space" or
"Show white space." See http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/WhiteSpace.htm.

Thank you for notifying me of Posting Etiquette.

The issue mentioned below did not solve the situation. The option was
already clicked. The issue is that it happens inconsistently.

Like the other issues. Being that they all happen inconsistently, I figured
there was a parallel of issues. So posting them as one issue may help a
technical person to understand the scope of the issues with Microsoft Word
and suggest a comprehensive solution.

If you have additional suggestions to the issue below, please advise.

Thank you.

The white space problem happens intermittently because a stray mouse click
will set it. That almost certainly is your problem unless you are in normal
view, in which case you wouldn't see them either.
