Printing Images with transparent gradient drawing objets

When I create a document with an image, then create a rectangle with a
transparent gradient fill on top of it, the image behind it shows up on the
screen, and on the print preview, but when I print the file, all I can see is
the gradient-filled rectangle. It is like it isn't printing transparent.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I think it may be a bug - I had the same problem in creating a "shading and
textures" tutorial

I suspect it is more to do with the printer driver but I am not sure
