Thanks, CyberTaz, you've jolted my memory!
Doing a Google newsgroup search, I came up with a post from early last year,
which said in part:
I just upgraded my system software from 8.6 to 9.2.2; all my software moved
over pretty painlessly EXCEPT MSWord 6.0.1. I couldn't print from it.
To which I said:

For full details, take a look at this Microsoft support article:
http://support.microsoft.com/? kbid=288769
[which says in part: "If you want to continue using Office 4.2.1, you should
not upgrade your operating system to Mac OS 9. If you already upgraded to
Mac OS 9, you must reinstall your earlier version of the Macintosh operating
system."]
Essentially OS 9.2 won't tolerate some of the characteristics of Word 6 /
Office 4.2. The Mac's operating systems have evolved greatly since Word 6
came out, and there were a few problems with Word 6 anyway (it was the first
porting of Word from the PC to the Mac, and was by no means perfect).
You would be *much* better off buying Office 2001. Otherwise, you'll need to
revert to an earlier OS, as stated in the MS article.

On an ancient G3 that I keep just for legacy software, I have OS 8.6
installed for this very reason.
But if everything else is working OK, maybe buying a registered copy of
Office 2001 on e-Bay is the best option...

* A SUGGESTION ‹ WAIT FOR CONSIDERED ADVICE: If you post a question, keep
re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is proposed; sometimes you'll be asked for further information so that a
better answer can be provided. Good tips about getting the best out of
posting are at
http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari
and it gives you a blank page the first time, you may need to hit the
circular arrow icon -- "Reload the current page" -- a few times).
* AND ONE MORE ‹ AVOID SPAM: To avoid spam directed at contributors of
newsgroups, you can set up a "send-only" dummy e-mail account. Full
instructions are at

Hello-
This is a trip in the WayBack Machine, so I really don't have a specific
response to offer. One suggestion, though, is to upgrade your OS to 9.2.2,
as 9.1 did have a number of glitches that were later resolved.
If that doesn't remedy the situation & you don't get more replies here, you
may want to post on the Apple Discussions board. There is a special area for
pre-OS X that is still very active, so you may get a solution there;
