Printing labels from Outlook contacts (using WORD)

I'm trying to print labels from my Outlook contacts, using mail merge. But I
keep getting an error message,: 'Either there is no default mail client or
the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run
Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client'. I have
tried to do this in 'Tools > Options > Other'; the box is checked, but I'm
still getting the error message.

What else should I be doing to make Outlook the default mail client ?
Normally I use Thunderbird, but I've told that not to check that it's default.

No one can answer your question when you do not post the steps you are using
and have not specified your operating system. In general, the message means
that Outlook is not your default mail client and not your default Contacts
manager. Only you know the rest. I suspect you have not configured your
operating system correctly even though you may think you have.

Mea culpa. I always forget something when typing in these small boxes !

I have WinXP Home SP2 and Office 2003. I'm opening WORD and then 'Tools >
Letters and Mailings > Mail Merge' and following the Task Pane prompts from
there. Having selected document type (labels) I get to select the document,
and then to select recipients. I choose 'Select from Outlook Contacts. and
am then prompted to 'Choose Contacts Folder'. When I click that I get the
error message 'Either there is no default mail client or the current mail
client cannot fulfil the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Office
Outlook and set it as the default mail client'.

I've done what appears to be necessary to make Outlook my default mail
client (as described before), but it the error message still appears as
described (even after re-booting). Yes, I can well believe something isn't
configured correctly; I'm seeking help as to what this might be, please.

Already posted. You have not set your default mail client and Contacts
Manager correctly. You do this in Control Panel > Internet Options >
Programs
You must also configure the Outlook Address Book correctly for your default
Outlook profile:
