Printing PDF Attachment Problem

John Majik

I am having a problem printing pdf attachments from Outlook 2003 and Outlook
2007. I am printing to a Canon Imageclass MF 6550 which is connected to a
Axis 1650 print server. After I try to print the e-mail attachement the
first e-mail will print but then all new print jobs will remain in the queue
unless I reboot the PC.

I have contacted both Canon and Axis. Canon indicated that it is a network
problem however I am able to print to my other network printer which is a
Brother HL-5170DN with a buit-in print server.

I have tried updating the driver with no luck. When I go to Printers and
Faxes the printer icon will show Printing instead of Ready even after I
manually clear the queue.

This is on a Windows Server 2003 network with Windows XP Pro workstations
and Office 2003 and Office 2007 both exhibing similar issues.

John,

I think you have three players in the picture, not just two. There are the
Clients (Office 03 and Office 07), the Server and the Printer/Printer
firmware. How old is this printer? Is it possible to pull-up or print a
"Configuration" page for the printer and examine the Firmware Date code (if
any)?

Also, if the printer has an 'Event Viewer' or 'Event Log' then maybe it
captured an error code or at least a "?" event around the time (or Page
Count) of your failed print attempts. Knowing there was a event the printer
itself could not classify but for which it logged a 'unknown' parameter or
event could possibly be significant.

Are you able to print these .PDF documents from Adobe Reader/Professional?

Also, has this setup ever worked correctly or did it begin after a recent
Patch update from some source? If there was a network push of patches
overnight they it may be necessary to consider something in the PC-Software
area, but I would think about the printer's Firmware first.

(unless the system locks up completely you might be able to rule out the
'Spooler' service running in the background of each desktop)

I realize my tips are not brand-specific, but I hope they are of some use.
Happy hunting!

How is the Canon attached to the print server, by USB or parallel port? Do
you have the latest firmware for the Axis?
(http://www.axis.com/techsup/prtsrv/axis_1650/firmware.php) The Axis is
supposed to contain status information. Does it show anything for the
printer?

While it doesn't solve the problem, you can always cycle the Print Spooler
service on the machine feeding the Axis to restart things.

Dennis,

Thanks for the ideas. I checked and there are no firmware updates from
Canon. The printer is about 8 months old. My one complaint to the owner is
that it was not the network model and I am suspecting an issue with the
external Print Server.

I logged in to the print server and it just shows that the print jobs were
all successful. regarding your question on printing from Adobe Reader, Adobe
Professional, Word or Excel. I can even print a pdf file from a website,
such as a manual, and no problems. It seems to be something with Outlook in
particular.

The major change that occurred was they installed a new Voip/T-1 line and we
are using the Cisco router as the DHCP server. The only other noticeable
change was the installation of Norton Anti-Virus 2008 and Norton Internet
Security 2009 which replaced the Symantec Corporate Edition that they were
using before. This was done on a recommendation by a Computer consultant.

I will try to see if there is a report to see if I can see the error codes
you mentioned.

In regards to the spooler service if I stop and restart it it fixes the
problem. But this is a problem because the average user doesn't even want to
purge the queue so I am trying to get an idea of what the problem could be.

While I wouldn't expect the AV program to affect Outlook printing, anything
sold by Symantec (Norton products are owned by Symantec) has a long and rich
history of causing havoc in Outlook.

Brian,

Thanks for the additional tips. The Canon MF-6550 is attached to the Axis
print server by a usb cable.

How would I "cycle the Print Spooler service on the machine feeding the Axis
to restart things." Do you mean the individual workstations that having the
problem?

Is the Canon/Axis being fed by a printer server or does each PC have a local
printer defined that points to the IP address offered by the Axis?
