Printing Problem w/Word

M

mhinc

Printing anything BUT Word comes quickly (Web, email, Excel, etc). But have a
doc in Word, and it takes 20 minutes to print. Someone in other post
suggested having "Background Printing" clicked "on," but that wasn't a fix.
Have XP Prof and an HP 5110xi printer. This is not critical, but sure is a
big pain. Any help would be appreciated.

T

TF

Check your printer setup: make sure that you haven't checked the Print
Directly to Printer or the Print TrueTypes as Graphics (or Raster mode or
whatever your printer driver calls graphics mode) options. Make sure that
Spool Print Documents First and Print after First Page has Spooled are both
checked.

The other possibility if the document is large and you don't have sufficient
system memory, spooling will go to disk and considerably slow down the print
process.

Checked all of that which you suggested, and none was contrary to what you
asked to ensure, so unfortunately, wasn't the solution. As to memory, have
256MB of RAM. So back to square one on this one?

I recommend that you check at HP.com to see if they have a newer driver for
your 5110xi and download if they do. Then delete and reinstall the printer,
using the newer driver if available.

Checked at HP.com and my drivers are all current, say they. And if it were a
driver, why would only Word's print time be affected? All other programs
print quickly.

Michael

Just try it and then I'll explain.

Ok, downloaded and installed. Then used to print a Word doc. Still took 20
minutes. I'd call Carly, but HP fired her! What next, if anything?

Is this just one document that takes 20 mins to print or all/any documents
take a long time? Which version of Word and is it patched up to date?

Terry

Whether it be a letter or my daughter's school notes, it usually doesn't
matter as to time it takes to print--20 minutes. The version is Word 2002; do
not know--nor how to, "patch up to date." Thanks for all your help thus far!

Would you try this test please. Start Word in Safe Mode by opening Start,
Run and typing in

winword /a

and pressing enter. This will start Word in Safe Mode. Open a document and
print it. Does it still take a ridiculous time to print?

To check the patch state of Word, click on Help, About Microsoft Word and
note down the version: it will say something like 'Microsoft Office Word
2002 (10.xxxxxxx) SP2'.

Did the Safe Mode on Word; no afffect on the printing time. The "patch state"
is Word 2002 (10.3416.3501) SP-1.

Please open Word of Outlook and then select Help, Check for Updates as I
think you are quite a few patches behind. Once installed, test the printing
again.

(By the way, I have Outlook Express, not Outlook on my PC.)

Since my last response (re: "administrator"), I went again to Microsoft's
site and pulled the Word 2002 updates that seemed asppropriate. When
attempting to execute, I get a pop-up "The expected version of the product
was not found on your system"

So Word is not part of the Office Suite: is it part of the Works Suite or
stand alone? If it is part of the Works Suite, open the Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the Works Suite Add-in.
