printing question

i know this is probably pretty simple, but please help! i am trying to print
certain pages within a page or subpage. if i have a page that will print
onto 8 printed pages, how do i only print pages 7 and 8 without getting the
entire thing? i just went through print preview, clicked through to page 7,
toggled to print "page" which then brought me to the printer menu which
showed 7 as a selection. i put in "7-8", but it still printed the entire
thing. please help.

Short answer: What you're seeing is normal behavior and there's no way to
change it.

The print options in OneNote are (IMO) a bit confusing and hopefully will be
made clearer in future versions. It's due in part to the similarity in terms
when talking about OneNote Pages and printed pages.

The Print Preview screen shows how the *currently selected* Page (i.e.
OneNote unit of organization in the folder/section/page/subpage hierarchy)
will be printed when split into several *printed* pages.

The Print Dialog box refers to which of the OneNote Pages will be printed,
and they are numbered 1-n starting from the top of the current section.

As an example:
I have a section that is split into 5 OneNote Pages. The third Page
contains a lot of information such that if it were printed, it would take up
10 pieces of paper. If I look at the Print Preview of my third Page, it will
tell me that this will be split into 10 printed pages. But the only choice I
have when I actually go to Print is the Page number. In that dialog box,
since I am only allowed to choose the Page number (and not the specific
page(s) within that Page, I will print the entire Page. Confused?

A workaround (other than throwing out the unwanted pages) might be to print
to the MODI driver or a PDF generator, then to print from an application that
supports either PDF or MDI files, print the desired subset of pages. It's
extra work for you but Mother Nature would thank you ;)

"Print selection" is missing too...

BIG drawback...

Basically: Getting things INTO ON is much easier in most cases than getting
them out again (printed, as a file)
While getting them in involves a simple drag and drop for most things,
whereas getting something out is almost always connected with workarounds or
copy/paste to intermediary software apps.

As an information gathering tool, ON is great, but for using the information
it lacks quite a few talents here and there.

Waiting for next version or SP2... and using workarounds in the meantime
since the overall benefit from ON clearly outweighs its deficiencies...

Mroth,
I have a different work around than Erik does. I have a section in my
notebook called "Print". When I need to print just a page or series of
pages, I copy those pages to Print, send that section to the printer, then
delete the copied pages.

I admit, it's a kludgey solution, but at least I get what I want, not the
whole section. :)

That's a great idea! I have several "throwaway" sections and pages that I
use for other temporary purposes. That one is being added to my bag o'
tricks.

You make it - Sorry I didn't make that clear. It's just a regular section I
create on each machine I use OneNote on. (Right click a section tab, select
New Section, name it Print.)

Why not just quickly open the "scratch" file which is an open empty page of
one note - the iccon should be in your lower right hand corner of your bottom
bar - it opens a small window - copy it there - print from there - del and
close
very easy -

You mean Side Notes, right? I don't use it because of the change in
formatting. Too many times I need the page title and date printed. Those
don't transfer over when you put content into the Side Note section. If you
don't need the page header information, use the Side Note section. :)
