I need to confirm why this is a problem. Here is the
scenario:
I have a 3 sectioned document.
Section 1 is 4 pages long and it contains my table of
contents (generated using Heading styles). Page
numbering is in the footer and is small roman numerals
Section 2 is the body - page numbering in footer and is
arabic numbers, restarting at 1
Section 3 is an appendix containing various form
documents and the numbering is also small roman numerals,
restarting at 1 (though I suspect the numbering type
doesn't really matter in this problem)
Under my printing options (Tools > Options > Print)
Update Fields IS NOT checked. I manually update my table
of contents, then choose File > Print. I tell Word I
want to print section 1 by putting "S1" in the "print
what" field. It prints the section, but the page numbers
referenced in the table of contents is incorrect.
If I turn on Update Fields, I can print without any
problems. My TOC is always correct. But why is it if I
manually update by right-clicking on the Table of
Contents and choosing Update Field > Update Entire
Table. I confirm that my TOC is correct on screen, then
send the command to print section 1 and it messes up my
TOC . . . is this a known bug? Or, is it just necessary
to have "Update Fields" checked? I would think after
manually updating and regardless of how I told the
section to print it should work. Secondly, if I print
the entire document, the TOC doesn't change.
Please advise. If update fields is a setting that is
necessary then I have over 100 PC's to visit to turn on
this setting!
