I have a small home office LAN with an old postscript printer connected to an
Amiga (running Samba so it looks a little like unix to the Windows machines).
I have printed from Office/Word from the Windows NT machine, a 98SE LapTop
and a Win 2K machine with Office 97. and Office 2000 with no real issues.
However, with Office 2003 on the Win XP Pro machine, when I try to print, the
network traffic goes nuts, judging from the traffic reports at the Amiga and
the lights on the switch. Word times out saying it can't find the printer
and offers the option to continue waiting for the printer or not even though
it shows ready in the "Printers and Faxes" window. Sometimes, (if i start
the Amiga first before powering up the XP machine) it will print, but only
after 8 minutes of delay with non-stop banging on the network while Word and
any other office application remains hung. This is for a simple, short, one
page of text.
Turning off bacground printing, A4/Letter resizing etc. has no effect.
What the heck is Word/XP doing that it can't print a single page in timely
fashion?
(NOTE: Other apps are slower printing from XP than they were from Win 2000
or Win NT, on the same setup, but only marginally. Word/Office Apps are
nearly impossible to get a print-out from unless I print to a file [using
same printer driver] then manually transfer the file to the Amiga, and there
copy it onto the printer queue.)
