Printing to Page Edge

J

Jon

I'm struggling to get Word -- both OS9 and OSX versions -- to output a file
that prints to the edge of an 8.5 x 11 page. Ultimately Ill be pdf-ing it,
so a plain-vanilla ps file will do.

Help!

Generally you can't do that because the printer settings refuse to print to
the edge of the page--the printer has to grip the paper somewhere. The
printer driver doesn't know you aren't planning on printing it.

Maybe you can get around this by going direct to PDF, which may not have the
same constraints?

Depending on how complex the doc is, I believe I've seen PDFs from
powerpoint that have an image all the way to the edge.

Depends on the printer. I have two here that still work. One is a
Brother 2600CN that wants superhighways round the edges. By messing
about in the printer settings, I forget how, I got that down to about
5mm. The other is an old Digital LN17ps (Xerox N17 really) It will
print right up to the edge all the way round.

It still thinks you are producing the PDF for some printer. You could
start with "Any Printer" in the print settings, but I only had partial
success with this, and there is no point if the pdf is eventually going
to be physically printed on a printer that does print to the edge.

You need to install and format the document for a printer that allows "full
bleed" printing.

Word will always stop at the margins advised by the printer driver.

When the error message appears, you can simply ignore and override the
warning: Word doesn't care.

Hope this helps

Thanks, folks...

I have a client who can make this happen on their PC platform -- must
be that they have a driver for a printer that does full bleed.

Or they have conned their printer into thinking it has a larger sheet of
paper in it than it has :)

If you only want to do a few of these, you can just override the dialog and
Word will send the job. The margins set in the printer driver are quite
conservative: most printers print images will go a few millimetres wider
than that.

But with the exception of printers designed for Full Bleed, none will go
right to the edge, because as Dayo says, the printer has to grip the paper
somewhere.

Cheers
