"Private" Distribution List

M

Mike

Hi. I have seen some discussion on the forum regarding hiding the e-mail
addresses in a distribution list. The recommendation was to put the list in
the BCC section.

For what is the "Private" selection intended? I am using Office 2007.

Thanks,
Mike.

When you send your one e-mail to multiple recipients, do you have the
permission from each recipient to divulge their e-mail address to the other
recipients? That is, did each recipient say that they want you to make
public their e-mail address? If a newsletter was sent to 1000 recipients,
do you really want those 999 other recipients to have your e-mail address to
do with it whatever they want, including pass it onto a spam list? Be
polite and keep their e-mails private. Don't divulge them to anyone else.
In fact, if you are sending a newsletter where you published a privacy
policy, you are likely violating your own privacy policy if you reveal each
recipient's e-mail address to the other recipients of your newsletter.

The Private option on an Outlook item prevents a delegate from seeing that
item. It doesn't change how the DL works.

Please understand ... I do not want the people on the list to see the names
on the list.

However, when I select the "Private" option, the recipients can see the
entire list.

Putting the names in the BCC section accomplishes the privacy, but this
seems to be a workaround to do what the "Private" option is supposed to be
accomplishing.

Is there somthing else other than "Private" that needs to be selected in
order for this to work?

Repeating: Selecting the Private option doesn't change how the DL works. All
it does is prevent a delegate, someone with permission to view your Contacts
folder, from seeing that DL -- seeing it **as it exists in your folder**.

Your original message indicated that you already know the solution: Put the
DL in the Bcc section.
