Probably a stupid question about Netsky.C virus & my website

John Smith

Hi. I've already written to my website host folks but they haven't gotten
back to me yet. Here is my problemo and I'm wondering if someone here might
at least give me enough of an answer to do some googling on the topic.

Can a *website* be hit by a virus?

My computer was infected with Netsky.C yesterday. The virus was caught &
"healed" by AVG, but what was odd was that the email (with the virus
attached) had come from my web host, so I thought that they were confirming
something I'd done to the site and (dork that I am) I opened the zipped
attachment.

Anyway, Frontpage will no longer load this website for me. It is a subweb,
and (oddly) I can get to the main site through Frontpage but not to the
subweb. I've tried both the "regular" way (going to "recent webs" and also
tried RUN: http://mywebsite . The Frontpage program runs and runs forever
and then returns an error message that says something like "out of memory".

Sheesh. Anyway, back to the question. Can a Frontpage website be hit by a
virus on the server end??? My site contains research about a controversial
subject, and has a great deal of information related to organized crime.
Could bad guys hit the actual site with a virus?

Thank you Steve (and also thanks to Thomas) for your suggestions. I'll try
your tricks first and if that doesn't solve the problem, I'll delete the
subweb as Thomas suggested. Thank goodness that I do have a back-up copy to
work from (although it isn't quite up to date, at least it would not mean
starting from scratch.)

I'm grateful for your help and hopefully this will be a reminder to the rest
of ya other frontpage kids to back up your websites regularly!

P.S. I'm hoping there is a special place in hell for hackers and virus
writers. (There, just a little venting of emotion. I hope you don't mind.)

I would with FrontPage closed and the computer offline: find and delete all files named
*.tmp and *.web and then clear your browsers temporary internet, cookie and history files.

The run an AVG scan on your entire computer.

Then reopen FrontPage and try.

Also make sure your avg definitions are up to date. If your using the free version and
having trouble with it hanging during update, browse to C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6 and
open the url.ini file in notepad. Replace the contents with this:

[SERVER_NAME]
1=download.grisoft.cz

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://download.grisoft.cz/softw/60/xx/
Actual URL=1

Save the file and then retry the update.
As I said this is for the free version only.

Yes, a web site can be hit by a virus, whether or not it is FP enabled, however that means that the
web server has been infected.

But in your case, since it is a subweb, not likely that the root web would not also have been hit.
Suggest you open the root web, then right click on the subweb, then select delete. You do have a
local copy of the subweb, correct? Then republish the your copy of the subweb back to the server. If
you can't delete the subweb, ask your host to delete it.

I would suggest you try the Netsky removal tool for your local computer.
Please download it from:

Hope it helps.
