Problem accessing Project Server from Project Professional 2003

Hi, I've been struggling with setting up SharePoint and Project Server.
Things are finally setup, accessible over the web, and working. Now, I
try and set my Enterprise Options in Project Pro 2003 to point to this
server. I restart Project, login, and get this error:

Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 53
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist
or access denied.

I've read some posts that say Terminal Services or a VPN is required.
This doesn't make much sense to me, as Project Server asked me for an
extranet address, and I need it to be accessible remotely by
not-exactly-tech-savvy people using Project or Project Web Access. Any
ideas?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave:

The project client talks directly to SQL server after being authenticated by
Project Server. I certainly hope that you don't have port 1433 open to the
world, as it wouldn't be long before you'd get clobbered with that
arrangement.<g> This is why VPN is suggested. The reason why Terminal
services is suggested is purely performance. Opening even moderate sized
projects over the Internet is painful and risky in terms of corruption.

Dave,

Did you ever solve this error? I've been receiving the same error for some
time when opening an MS Project document from my PC client. In my scenario, I
am trying to access a local network, but different subnet.

Thanks

Me too posts are usually not very productive. Similar symptoms don't
necessarily equate to same problem. So, if you're really serious about
troubleshooting, you'll take the time to start your own thread describing
your situation exactly. In your case, with little to go on, I'd advise you
to talk to your network folks about port restrictions between the subnets.
I'd also look at latency on the network to eliminate a SQL timeout. The port
issue is the most likely cause.
