problem after SP2 with "can't display Clip Art"

J

jginder

Any gui event to Powerpoint 2003 now brings up a dialog box that says
"Microsoft Office Powerpoint can't display Clip Art". The messagein the bos
continues: "This feature is not available. To make this feature available,
please run Setup again, select "Add or Remove Features" and change the
feature to "Run from my computer" or "Run from CD/Network". The box has only
an OK button, and must be dismissed before Powerpoint will do anything else.
The box comes up 2-3 times when opening a powerpoint doc, then once for every
keystroke when using Powerpoint! This makes Powerpoint effectively unuseable
for any real work. I've tried running setup and repairing. I've tried
Office safe mode. Neither help. This started when SP2 was installed, as
nearly as I can tell.

The instructions are "to make this feature available" - that is, clip art. I
don't want to make the feature available, and have not done anything in
Powerpoint that should indicate to Powerpoint that I am requesting clip art.
I realize that I may have to do something to repair this problem, but
installing Office SP2 should not put Powerpoint into this damaged state, nor
should it require that I activate the clip art feature of Office.

You're absolutely correct jginder. I just wanted to know if that solved your
problem in case other users come up with that same scenario (I haven't seen
any other Clip Art problems related to Sp2 in the forums yet).

I tried installing to install the clip organizer and clip collections on
first use. No luck - same problem. So even though I don't want it, I
installed the Clip Organizer to the hard drive and the clip collections for
install on first use. Now, the problem seems to have gone away.

I'm also getting the problem with Excel and Word, not just PowerPoint.
Installing the Clip Organizer does eliminate the problem.
But it would be nice if I didn't to install something I really don't need.

I have been having the same exact problem, and it actually started today. I
tried to load up a PowerPoint slide, and it gave me the same error. I also
do not have the Clip Art organizer, or the clip art installed (although I
might install it if I absolutely have to). It happens about every 2 seconds
until I close PowerPoint.
After the problem started, I went to the Microsoft website, and saw that SP2
was available. I installed it, but the problem is still there.
I have noticed, however, that if I rename the .ppt file to .pps, I didn't
seem to have this problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have this problem.

1. I upgraded my laptop w/ office SP2 and couldnt display any picture
in Word without installing clip art.

2. I filed a case w/ tech support, and after being bounced back to word
support, they eventually acknowledged that it was an update issue, but
the sole reccomendation was to roll back the update.

3. I have another machine that was only updated with visio and project
2003 SP2, not office 2003 SP2 (I was avoiding it), and it now exhibits
the same problem

Some component that is updated in office 2003 SP2 and either visio 2003
or project 2003 absolutely requires clip art to be present, and makes
your machine unusable if it is absent.

(CONTAINS WORKAROUND)

I also had this problem, and can confirm that it only started happenin
after I installed SP2.

Unlike John C. Meyer, I was only getting this problem in PowerPoint
not Word or Excel. I fixed this problem without installing Clip Ar
features by customizing the PowerPoint toolbar, and removing the "Cli
Art..." button

1. Quickest workaround is to simply de-select the Drawing Toolbar from
being viewable (View >> Toolbars >> Deselect Drawing Toolbar)

2. Another workaround is to install the ClipArt Feature from the Office
Shared Tools feature in Add/Remove Programs >> Office 2003 >> Change >>
Add New Features

Public article is in the works.

Two Workarounds:

1. Disable the Drawing Toolbar in Powerpoint (and or Word, Excel, etc)

2. Install the Clipart feature

**If you do option #1, you can choose to not install the ClipArt
feature, and still use Powerpoint (and Word, Excel, etc) with Office
2003 SP2.**
