Problem Between Word Versions??

D

David

I recently uninstalled an older, stand-alone version of MS
Word from my PC running Windows ME. After which, I
installed MS Office Suite 2000 Professional, which has a
different version of MS Word.

After doing this, I've noticed that I get an error when I
try to right click on and use "open with" and
select "Microsoft Word for Windows" for MS Word files
(.doc) or other types of files I previously could
use "open with" MS Word (e.g., SAS statistical software
files).

The error message I get is "This file does not have a
program associated with it to allow this action.
Establish an association in the folder options control
panel." I've tried everything I could think of in the
file association field to no avail, and I think the
problem is that the "open with" is pointing to my old
version of Word, which was uninstalled.

How do I delete the old "open with" pointer and change the
pointer to my currently installed version of MS Word?

Thanks!!

Thanks Jesse, but I've tried what you suggest already, and
it did not work. Is there a way to delete the choices
that appear when I right click on an icon and choose "open
with?"

In short, how can I be sure that I've removed all of the
previous files associated with my old/uninstalled version
of MS Word? I hope I don't have to uninstall office
entirely and reinstall it entirely????

David,

unfortunately, I do not think there is an option, at least
that I'm aware of that will enable you to modify the right-
click options in Windows Explorer. It's my understanding
that those options are enabled and set during
installation. Perhaps some other enlightened user or MVP
may have an Idea. You also might try posting your question
in the VBA user's group as Right-Click Options for Opening
Word Doc's.

Suzanne: Thanks, but can I delete the "Microsoft Word for
Windows" choice from that menu? This was never a problem
before swithched Word versions.

If Suzanne's advice doesn't rectify the problem then you'll have to
venture into the Registry to rectify the problem. (I was hoping the /r
switch would do it for you but apparently not)

You'll need to find the SAS key under:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.

Locate the "OpenWithList" key and modify the Command key.

There is a distinction between "who owns which shortcut menu". :)

The shortcut menu in question doesn't belong to Word - it belongs to
Windows so it would be a Windows question rather than a Word VBA
question. :)

The main way to determine shortcut menu 'ownership' is to note where
you see the menu. If outside of the application then it's Windows.
Inside the application then it belongs to the application.

Possibly, however since I haven't personally deleted this type entry I
wouldn't recommend it.

If the problem persists, after following my latest advice and
Suzanne's advice to use "Choose Program." option and mark "Always use
selected program..." then I would take a look at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache\Micr
osoft Word for Windows

check the command path and verify it point to the current location for
Winword.exe. If it doesn't then make the necessary changes.

Thanks Beth. Very informative, but I still have the
problem using "open with." David

Thanks again Beth. For some reason though I could not
open the address you provided. Also, the "choose program"
approach you and Suzanne suggest hasn't worked.

I'll try the Windows ME community.
