Problem changing/saving files to any directory OTHER than the default

Using Office XP on Toshiba Tablet PC

While in any Office 2002 product I experience the
following:

When opening or trying to save a file to any folder (other
than the default) it can take 20-30 seconds for the
directory to open. It's almost like the system is
searching through a huge directory.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving
me crazy!
