Problem connecting after 2003 client upgrade

M

Marcus Pierce

All,

I am in the process of upgrading a large company from 2002 to 2003 (client
and server). The first thing I did was upgrade my client to 2003. This is
done by a software distribution person from our infrastructure group, using
Radia.
First, they put the 2003 client on my machine WITHOUT taking 2002 off. Both
were on my machine. When I opened 2003, I was able to connect to the server
fine, no errors, no message windows or anything.

Then they took 2002 off of my machine. The next time I opened 2003, it would
not connect to the server. So I opened 2003 offline. Then, it first it asked
me to upgrade my global settings. Fine, I did that. Then it asked me whether
I wanted to accept macros from Microsoft. I agreed, and Project opened. So I
went to Tools > Enterprise Options > Server Accounts and checked my
connection settings. When I hit the Test Connection button under Account
Setttings, it "successfully connected to the specified server". However, when
I close out of Project and try to actually connect to the server (upon
re-opening Project), it says it still cannot connect!

The server is still 2002. I thought the 2003 client was supposed to be able
to connect to a 2002 server and, in fact, when I had 2002 still on my machine
(at the same time as 2003) it connected fine. Anyone know what's going on?

Thanks,

Marcus,

Sounds like the deinstall of MSPP '02 ripped out a little too much. Did you check IE's trusted sites to see if you still have an entry there for the project server?

Yes, the project server is still a trusted site. It's weired, because when I
test the connection through the Options screen, it successfully connects.

Marcus,

That test is simply checking to see if the URL you typed responds when asked if it's alive. There are far more downstream connections that need to be made after you've specified the right URL. Can you post the exact text of the message or errors you're getting?

Project 2003 Professional cannot have write access to Project 2002 server
without running a special patch against the Project 2002 server database.

Sorry, not sure what it is or how to get it, try calling Microsoft support
and ask them, I'm sure it must be something common.

El-Kafa2a

you have to clean the registry

I have a script i run that cleans the registry on the clients PC which
solves your problem

I am sorry i dont have a web link for the script and i didnt do it manualy
to tell you where to look in the reg

but iam sure you'll find the script in microsoft fixes

its a client side problem try a fresh installation and if it didnt work then
i am wrong

good luck

I thought Marcus said the MSPP03 client had already connected successfully - before the deinstallation of MSPP02??
